Abstract

1,218,908. Drilling machine; grinding. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. 12 June, 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 29947/69. Headings B3C and B3D. A machine for drilling, reaming, tapping or grinding large diameter holes, for example, in a vessel 10 having a flange 11, has a frame comprising sections 17, 18 and 19 which can be adjusted for length by using spacers between the sections. The frame is pivotably mounted on a member 14 which is centrally positioned on the vessel by rods 12 and 13. Member 14 takes no load, which load is borne by the flange 11. Section 18 has two frame branches 23, 24. Wheels 31, 32, 42, 43, Fig. 3, rotatably mount the frame on the flange, wheel 31 is driven by a motor 47. Levelling legs 25, 26 and 38 are operated by air motors and act to lift the wheels off the workpiece and level the machine. Once this has been done hold-down clamps 29, 30 and 44, also operated by air motors, secure the machine in place. A power head 70 driven by a reversible electric motor 71, drives a spindle 73 through gearing 72. The lead 70 is mounted on a power head support 50 which can be moved sideways, forwards or backwards by air motors and can be clamped in a given position by a plate (61), Fig. 4 (not shown). The weight of the head 70 is counterbalanced by a counterweight 88; the head is moved by means of a screw 94 and a motor 95, the lower end of the screw is associated with an electrical mechanical brake to stop the motor from coasting when a stop control is operated. A drill shaft 75 is located in spindle 72 and has a spade drill 76. A bushing holder 100 supports the shaft 75 and comprises two different bushings, only one of which is used at any one time. Fig. 5 shows bushing 101 in an operational position with bushing 102 swung out of the way and held by a pin 117. The bushing 100 is adjustably mounted on the power head support 50. Movement of the bushing is either (1) by placing a bar 121, Fig. 5 and Fig. 11 (not shown), between the head 70 and the bushing such that the motor 95 moves the bushing; or (2) by the bushing being powered separately, Figs. 16-18 (not shown). A safety switch 111 restricts downward movement of head 70. The operating end of frame sections 18 has level support brackets 130 and 131 which hold levels 132 and 133. These enable correct setting of the machine relative to the workpieces. Removal of chips from a hole is by feeding coolant fluid through holes 140, 141 so that the chips are subjected to hydraulic lift. As shown the spade drill has guides 145, which may be spirally mounted to prevent drill wander. Filler pieces may be positioned between some of the guides to ensure a high upward velocity of the coolant. (For Figures see next page)
