Abstract

1,218,392. Direct acting compressors. BRAUN-CAMPBELL ENG. Ltd. Jan. 20, 1968, No. 3143/68. Heading F1B. A direct acting compressor comprises a framework 15, a combustion cylinder 14 in the framework a pair of opposed engine pistons 16 reciprocably dispersed in the combustion cylinder, a pair of compressor cylinders 12, 13 aligned one at each end of the combustion cylinder, a pair of compressor pistons 17, 18 slidably disposed one in each compressor cylinder and a pair of piston rods 19 one extending from each end of the combustion cylinder and each connecting one of the engine pistons to one of the compressor pistons. A synchronizing mechanism includes a crankshaft 24 having throws spaced at substantantially 180 degrees, the crankshaft being mounted in the framework for rotation about an axis extending perpendicularly with respect to the axis of the combustion cylinder, a pair of rocker beams 21 each pivotally connected to the framework for oscillation about an axis parallel to the axis of the crankshaft, means pivotally joining each one of the engine pistons to a respective one of the rocker beams at a point on the rocker beam spaced from the connection 55 of the rocker beam to the framework and a pair of connecting rods 25, rotatably connected one to each of the opposite throws of the crankshaft and each pivotally connected to a respective one of the rocker beams at a point 64 between the connection of the rocker beam to the framework and the point of connection on the rocker beam of the means joining the rocker beam to the engine piston. The compressor may comprise a high pressure stage 13, as shown, or may comprise two low pressure stages. The two stage compressor can also be twinned to increase the delivery and thus may be achived by placing two units side by side and utilizing a common crankshaft. Means for varying the stoke of the pistons, is described.
