A continuous process for the creaseless, non- iron, permanent shrinkage or water repellent finishing of woven fabrics, knitted goods or fibre fleeces of cellulose fibres comprises impregnating the material to be finished with at least one processing medium and subjecting the impregnated material to a combined steaming and drying treatment at a temperature up to 100‹C and then to a dry heat treatment in superheated steam at a constant temperature in the rough 140‹-170‹C, the steps subsequent to impregnation being carried out in such a manner that the moisture content of the material is continually decreased. The process may be carried out in an apparatus comprising an impregnating padder, a processing chamber having an insulated housing, a combined steaming and drying treatment zone and a dry heat treatment zone and means for continuously feeding the material through the padder and heating zones, the combined steaming and drying zone and dry heat treatment zone being provided with separate heating systems, e.g. heating cylinders, a circulating system with nozzles or heating suction drums. The material may be subjected to tensioning in the width during the treatment. Materials comprising blends of cellulose fibres and synthetic fibres may subsequently be heated to 180‹-200‹C to set the synthetic fibres and then subjected to a quick cooling-down to below 50‹C. In Fig. 2 the material 18 is passed from padder 22 to tentering machine inlet 23 and passed on tentering chains 21 through radiation predryer 17 to insulated housing 10 having at the inlet seal 15 and comprising a combined steaming and drying zone 11 and 12, heat treatment zone 13 and fibre heatsetting zone 14. A radiation shock-heating zone 16 is provided between combined steaming and drying zone 11 and 12 and heat treatment zone 13, and nozzle systems 24 connected with circulating devices are provided in heat-treatment zone 13 to adjust the temperature. After leaving the housing the material passes through cooling zone 19 and cutting device 20.
