1,217,041. Polyamide-imide/polyimide copolymers. SOC. RHODIACETA. 23 Feb., 1968 [25 Feb., 1967], No. 8995/68. Heading C3R. Acopolymer of a polyamide-imide and a polyimide comprises organic radicals R linked to one another by radicals of the formulµ R 1 and R 2 being, respectively, a trivalent organic radical containing at least 3, carbon atoms and a tetravalent organic radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms, R, R 1 and R 2 each being an aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic radical containing at least one N, O or S atom, the polymer being terminated by radicals of the formulµ The copolymer may be prepared by forming separately a polyamide-imide (by reacting a di- or di- and poly-isocyanate with a tricarbonyl compound in at least one polar inert organic solvent) and a polyimide (by reacting a di- or di- and poly-isocyanate with a tetracarbonyl compound in at least one polar inert organic solvent), mixing the two polymer solutions, and allowing the mixture to react at less than 100‹ C. to produce the copolymer in solution. The solution may be applied to a support which is subsequently heated to produce a film of the copolymer, or alternatively the copolymer may be precipitated from solution as a fine powder by adding a non-solvent. Numerous examples of R, R 1 and R 2 are given in the Specification.
