Abstract

Propylene oxide is produced by oxidizing isopropanol in the liquid phase with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at elevated temperature and a pressure sufficient to maintain the isopropanol and the reaction product (comprising unreacted isopropanol, hydrogen peroxide and acetone) in the liquid phase, removing the acetone from the hydrogen peroxide and unreacted isopropanol, reacting the hydrogen peroxide with a solution of urea to give a precipitate of an adduct of urea with hydrogen peroxide in the molar proportion of l:1, mixing this adduct with an extracting solvent which is an alkyl ketone with up to 7 carbon atoms; an alkyl ester with up to 7 carbon esters or an alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ) orthophosphate thereby dissolving the hydrogen peroxide and leaving at least part of the urea in solid form, replacing or mixing the solvent in the resulting hydrogen peroxide solution with one or more carboxylic acids of formula RCOOH, in which R is hydrogen, phenyl or a C 1 -C 5 alkyl radical optionally substituted by at least one electrophilic group in an inert solvent, thus producing a percarboxylic acid solution, removing any water present in the remaining peracid solution by azeotropic distillation and reacting the resulting anhydrous percarboxylic acid solution with propylene to give the required propylene oxide, the process being carried out in the absence of heavy metal ions. Suitable inert solvents are, for example, n-propyl acetate, benzene, ethyl acetate, toluene and xylene. If desired, the reaction may be carried out in the presence of an initiator, e.g hydrogen peroxide or azobisisobutyronitrile.
