Abstract

1,216,587. Disproportionating olefins. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 13 June, 1969 [9 Sept., 1968], No. 42795/68. Heading C5E. Olefins are disproportionated in the presence of an alumina-containing disproportionation catalyst, e.g. Re 2 O 7 /Al 2 O 3 , the alumina having been pretreated prior to catalyst formation to adjust its disproportionation activity and/or selectivity by one of the following treatments: (a) addition thereto of an anion, e.g. a vanadate, fluoride, phosphate or sulphate ion; (b) in the case where the alumina in dehydrated form contains more than 0À1 wt. per cent of deleterious chemically combined anions, e.g. sulphate anions, by removal thereof by washing with water or alkaline solutions, e.g. solutions of sodium bicarbonate or ammonia. The catalyst may also be modified by treatment with alkali or alkaline earth metal ions. Examples show how treatments (a) and (b) effect the disproportionation of propylene and isobutene/2-butene mixtures.
