[Also in Division C5] In a chemical process, e.g. for making a synthesis gas for ammonia or methanol a hot gaseous stream 63 at a temperature above 300‹ C. is passed in heat exchange at 65 with compressed air 89. which expands through a gas' turbine 94 which drives a compressor 86 for the air and also provides usable power, e.g. to an electric generator 96. The stream 63 consists mainly of H 2 , N 2 , CO and steam from a secondary catalytic reformer 61 provided with air 59 and a gas 56 from an externally heated tubular catalytic reformer 40 provided with steam 42 and a normally gaseous or vaporized liquid hydrocarbon 37. The synthesis gas 63 is passed through' a: steam-Iboiler- 67, catalytic-water gas shift reactor 71 heat .exchangers-; 75 and carbon dioxide scrubber- 77 to a: compressor 82: A. combustion chamber 91 is included in the air line, the air. 51' leaving- the turbine .94 being burnt with fuel 50 in the reformer. 40. The UC 2 required may be first prepared by the reaction of U and C, the reaction between H 2 and VC x being at 700-1050‹ C., preferably at the same temperature as the UC producing reaction. The Specification includes a formula giving the optimum CH 4 concentration required.
