Abstract
1,216,401. Casting composite articles. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 9 Jan., 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 1182/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] Carbon, e.g. graphite, filaments or fibres 2, bonded by a Sn-base metal matrix 4 (e.g. of Sn itself or Sn-base alloys of metals such as Pb, Sb and Bi) have a coating 3 of a higher melting point metal such as Ni, Ti or Cr, e.g. 0À1-3 microns thick. The fibres are 1 inch long and constitute 33À5% by volume of the composite article. They may be side-by-side as shown, or randomly orientated or in the form of a textile or fabric. The metal coating 3 may be produced by electrodeposition, decomposition of the metal halide or sputtering. A graphite yarn of 720 filaments (average diameter 6À9 microns) is cut into 4 inch lengths and electroplated (see Division C7) with Ni and the filaments then cut to 1 inch fibres for placing in a tubular 1 inch mould with a 0À135 inch bore and end closures. The mould is lowered into molten tin in an evacuated chamber, so that the metal, assisted subsequently by argon pressure, enters the mould bore through holes in the mould wall.
