Abstract
1,216,124. Alkali metal silicates; silica. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 6 Jan., 1969 [4 Jan., 1968], No. 724/69. Heading C1A. Alkali metal silicates xM 2 Oy8iO 2 in which M is an alkali metal and the ratio y: x is 2-8 to 3-5:1 are produced by a wet process comprising digesting pulverized hydrated or non-hydrated microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline silica with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate. The silica may be opal, chalcedony diatomite tripoli or an opaline rock comprising quartz, cristobalite and disordered silica. The mole ratio of silica to alkali metal hydroxide in solution may be 1À4 to 1-9:1 and the ratio of silica to alkali metal carbonate may be in excess of the desired y: x ratio. Preferably, the digestion is performed at 50-70 p.s.i.g. and the reactants heated by steam to 110-130 C. Colloidal silica may be precipitated by acidification of the alkali metal silicate with hydrochloric or sulphuric acids or, as in Example III, by the addition of aqueous sodium chloride and C0 2 .
