Abstract
1,215,000. Pipe couplings. DRACONE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 13 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 14537/67. Heading F2G. A coupling unit for mounting on a pipe end or manifold comprises a tubular part 1 having a number of radially extending projections 2 each provided with an aperture through which extends a claw member 17 that is pivotally secured to a ring 8. Means for moving the ring to and fro on the part 1 are provided. The apertures in the projections are so located radially of the part 1 in relation to the pivot points 22 of the claw members and in relation to the inclinations of the inner and outer profiles 33, 25 of the members which respectively engage the inner and outer margins of the apertures, that the claw ends 23 of the members are held outwardly from the axis of the part 1 when the ring 8 is near to the projections 2 and are moved radially inwards towards that axis and axially towards the end of the part 1 when the ring is moved away from the projections; the latter movement of the ring causes the claws to grip an annular flange 26 of a pipe 27 to bring the face of the flange in sealing relation with the end face of the part 1. As shown, the ring 8 is screwed internally and is in engagement with the external screw-thread of a sleeve 4 rotatable, but restrained axially, by a hand wheel 29. A dovetail groove 35 houses a pair of rubber sealing rings 34, 39 having respectively inwardly and outwardly directed lips and being held in the groove by a retaining ring 37 which regulates the degree to which the lips are compressed; alternatively, the sealing rings are moulded as a single ring grooved centrally to receive the ring 37. In modifications, (a) the ring 8 is moved by hydraulic rams, there being a latch member which normally rests on the outer rim of the flange 2 but which locks the sleeve 4 when the flange 26 meets the ring 37, and (b) the sleeve 4 carries a worm-wheel rotated by a worm mounted on the shaft of a reversible, hydraulic pneumatic or electric, rotary motor.
