Abstract

1,214,941. Optical apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERAL D'ELECTRICITE. Jan. 30, 1968 [Feb. 14, 1967j, No.4833/68. Heading G2J. [Also in Division H3] Optical waves having frequencies w 1 , and w 2 are generated and amplified by means of a resonant cavity comprising reflectors M 1 ", M 3 " and 7, reflector 7 being transparent to radiation at a pumping frequency w 3 = w 1 + w 2 and one side of the triangular resonant cavity including a crystal 4 (e.g. of lithium niobate, KDP or tellurium) providing non-linear polarization when pumped. Reflector 7 may be a plane mirror or, as shown, a prism having faces 49, 50 covered with antireflection coatings for frequency w 3 , and faces 41, 45 covered with anti-reflection coatings for frequencies w 1 and w 2 . The generated seams w 1 , w 2 are incident upon face 44, adjacent to air gap 46, at an angle greater than the critical angle for each frequency so that they are totally reflected. Mirror M 3 " may be partially transmissive for extracting radiation at frequency w 1 or w 2 , or both. Alternatively, a plane vitreous sheet may be arranged in side 430 of the cavity. In a second embodiment Fig.4, (not shown) mirrors M 1 " and M 3 " are replaced by totally reflecting prisms arranged so that radiation at frequencies w 1 , w 2 enters and leaves the prisms at the Brewster angle. One of these prisms, corresponding to M 1 " may be modified by making its reflecting surface spherical or elliptical, having its focus inside crystal 4 and preferably at its centre. The pumping radiation may be derived from a laser, and may be polarized in a plane which is orthogonal to that of the generated radiations.
