Abstract

1,214,935. Fabric-film laminates. STAFLEX INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 22 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 25577/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] Fusible interlinings are produced by bonding together a woven or knitted fabric or a non- woven fabric having a defined pattern of apertures similar to the interstices of woven or knitted fabric, with a synthetic resin film which has a weight in the range of 5-50 grams/ square metre and softens at 100-200‹ C., and then subjecting the composite fabric/resin film material to heating and to a blast of gas from the direction of the uncoated surface of the fabric to rupture the areas of film covering the interstices or like apertures. The film which may have been stretched in one or two directions or may be unstretched may be formed of low, medium or high density polyethylene, copolymers based on ethylene, propylene, vinyl acetate or methylacrylate, polyamides or copolymers thereof or polyvinyl chlorides or copolymers thereof with or without a plasticizer and the fabric may be made from cotton, viscose rayon or nylon. In Fig. 1 base fabric 1 and heat softenable resin film 2 are drawn from supply reels 3 and 4 and are bonded together by passage between heated roll 6, which is preferably coated with a non-stick substance, e.g. p.t.f.e., and backing roll 5 which is preferably covered with hard rubber, the roll 6 being patterned if it is desired to bond the fabric and film over only selected areas. Alternatively molten resin may be extruded through slit orifice 7 and the resin film 8 bonded with the fabric 9 drawn from supply reel 10 by passage between cooled metal roll 11 which is preferably coated with a non-stick substance e.g. silicone rubber, and backing roll 12, preferably covered with hard rubber. The combined material 13 having the coated surface at the underside is then passed over preheating unit 14 equipped with gas burners or infrared radiators, beneath hot air blower 15 having a slit orifice extending for the full width of the combined material to disrupt the areas of film which cover the interstices in the fabric, and over a second hot air blower 16 or gas burners or infra-red radiators to melt the free edges of film material and compact the material and is then drawn by rolls 18 over cooling drum 17 and wound on to reel 19. Alternatively the fabric with the film on the outside may be carried in a tensioned condition around a perforated rotating drum, hot air being blown outwards through the perforations while infrared heating is applied from outside, a large proportion of the surface of the perforated drum being enclosed by a shield or screen. The hot air may be at 140-230‹ C. and may have a speed of 30/metres/sec. or higher. The interlining may subsequently be fused to another fabric, e.g. tweed, by heat and pressure. Alternatively the material may be bonded to another fabric directly after disintegration of the film by hot air blowing.
