Abstract
1,214,439. Reactor shields. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 5 March, 1970 [10 March, 1969 (2); 4 April, 1969], No. 10657/70. Heading G6C. In a sodium cooled fast reactor the core 1 is mounted in the vessel 3 which is provided with a liquid sodium thermal shield 13 between the metal casings 13, 15 and the roof 12 and casing 15. The roof 12 is therefore maintained at a uniform temperature during reactor start-up and shut-down, thereby reducing mechanical stressing. The liquid sodium in the space 14 between casings 13, 15 is circulated by convection but in an alternative form the space 14 may be subjected to forced circulation. In a further embodiment, the sodium of the therma shield is circulated by the reactor coolant pumps which urge the coolant through the core and the heat exchangers within the pressure vessel.
