Abstract
1,213,700. Graft polymers. BORG-WARNER CORP. 6 Sept., 1968 [14 Sept., 1967], No. 42443/68. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is prepared by polymerizing from 96 to 50% by weight of a mixture of at least 65% of methacrylonitrile and at least one other monomer in the presence of from 4 to 50% of a substrate comprised of a rubbery polymeric material selected from (1) conjugated diene homopolymers and (2) copolymers containing a conjugated diene and up to 30% of a monomer selected from styrene, substituted styrene, alkyl acrylate and alkyl alkacrylate. The graft comonomer may be methyl methacrylate, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, p-chlorostyrene, methyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate or vinyl toluene. In the examples polybutadiene is grafted with methacrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate, o-chlorostyrene or n-butyl acrylate and a butadiene-styrene copolymer is grafted with methacrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate or o-chlorostyrene, the graft polymerization being carried out in aqueous emulsion.
