Abstract

1,213,647. Air-depolarized cells. QUALCAST Ltd. 7 Feb., 1968 [27 June, 1967; 17 Nov., 1967], Nos. 29696/67 and 52521/67. Heading H1B. A primary cell comprises (a) a consumable metal anode; (b) a cathode comprising a gas chamber or labyrinth having an inlet and an outlet and formed from a sheet of material cut out and covered on at least one side with a microporous sheet material lined with a catalyst layer and a conductive layer; and (c) an electrolyte container. In a particular embodiment, Fig. 1, the cathode comprises frame 10 having the sheet material 11 folded over it. The microporous material may be PVC. The conductor may be silver. The gas, air or O 2 under pressure, is fed in via duct 21 and out via the corresponding duct on the opposite side. The frame 10 may be made of metal or metal coated or current may be withdrawn from nickel grids backing each side of the microporous sheet. Two anodes (not shown) are inserted in electrolyte chambers 6 and 7. The assembly is riveted together but may alternatively be stuck. A plurality of these cells may be made into a battery. An alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, comprises an electrolyte container 53 into which are slotted a plurality of cell units. In this case each cathode is bi-polar so that frame 10 is insulating and there is no connection between the microporous sheets on either side. The anodes each have a handle 56 for easy lifting in and out and an electrical contact peg or selftapping screw 60 which contacts leaf-spring 54 above the electrolyte surface. The springs also hold the anode in position. The anodes may have a protective coating where they contact the electrolyte surface. In either embodiment the electrolyte may be freed of deposits by circulating it through a filter.
