Abstract
1,213,369. Continuous kilns; burners. BICKLEY FURNACES Inc. 28 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 56595/68. Headings F4B and F4T. In a horizontally extending continuous kiln having both longitudinal and transverse gaps in the ware on the conveyer and longitudinally spaced gas streams along the kiln walls which circulate the gas in the transverse gaps in the ware the conveyer is arranged, after a dwell period, to move the ware forward a distance equal to the spacing between adjacent gas streams. Kiln cars 48 are advanced through the kiln by a pusher dolly 210 actuated by an hydraulic piston and cylinder 224, 226, the dolly carrying pivotable dogs 216, 218 which engage the frame 230 of a kiln car, the stroke of the piston 224 being equal to half the length of a car. Longitudinally the kiln is divided into a heating zone and a cooling zone, fan means being provided in each zone to draw the gas over the cars in a direction contrary to the movement of the cars. The gas streams may be staggered longitudinally on opposite sides of the kiln (Fig. 4) or may be arranged with opposite streams at different levels, i.e. one at the top and the other at the bottom of the kiln (Fig. 8). A pair of vertically sliding entrance doors prevent excess air being drawn into the kiln. The gas burners, Fig. 6, comprise an air supply 84 and a gas supply 86 mixing occurring adjacent a flame retaining disc 96 where the gas is emitted via ports 95. A tubular nozzle adapter 66 is fitted and a pilot connection 100 is provided. Control means for maintaining the desired temperature consists of a pyrometer 130, Fig. 3, which actuates a temperature control 132 which in turn controls a motor M operating a throttle valve 134 in the air supply pipe. A gas pressure regulating valve 138 is controlled by a control line 136 and a throttle valve 140 is manually set to the desired fuel to air ratio. The air supply for the gas/air mixture, and for the air jets in the cooling zone is supplied by two fans (102, Fig. 1B, 170, Fig. 1C) and fed by manifolds and branch lines to the nozzles along each side of the kiln.
