Abstract

[Also in Division G1] Data enabling the variations in drag force set up during rotation of a tyre to be calculated is obtained by rotating the tyre in contact with a rotatable drum, the axes of rotation of tyre and drum being parallel to each other and constrained during measurement to a fixed separating distance, measuring periodically the instantaneous speeds of rotation of tyre and drum or the relative speeds thereof, and comparing these speeds to register variations between them from which variations in drag force may be calculated. The representations of the instantaneous speeds may be registered on an X-Y plotter, which may be mechanical or electrical. Alternatively, the X-Y plotter may be replaced or supplemented by an oscillograph. In a typical example, twin opposed bevel gear-wheels are drivably connected to wheel and drum so that the drive to one gear-wheel is in a contrary sense to the other, and the gear-wheels are interconnected by an interposed pair of planet bevel gears freely rotatably mounted on a common shaft carried by a cage so that the instantaneous relative rotational speed of wheel and drum is determinable from the instantaneous rate of rotation of the cage. The variation is examined by using a mechanical X-Y plotter, the X-axis representing the speed of rotation of the wheel and the Y axis representing the speed of rotation of the cage. Departure from a straight line plot indicates variations in effective rolling radius. In other examples, electrical analogues of the gear system are used. Specification 951,606 is referred to.
