Abstract
1,212,546. Charging I. C. engines. E. A. VON SEGGERN and H. E. VON SEGGERN. Nov. 20, 1967, No. 52717/ 67. Heading F1B. The charge is supplied to a cylinder 1 in two portions, one, consisting of air or a fuel-air mixture containing excess air, being positioned around the cylinder axis and the other, consisting of an ignitable mixture, being directed to circulate on the outside of the one portion. The one portion may be directed to circulate about an axis a small radial distance from the cylinder axis, the other portion circulating about the one portion in the same direction. In the embodiment shown air is supplied through a valve controlled passage 9 opening upstream of the inlet valve 4 and inwardly of the mixture inlet manifold 6. The valves 4 and 13 are operated by cams 16 and 15 and the valve 13 may be opened slightly later than the valve 4. The flow of air through the tube 9 may be controlled by a valve linked to operate in unison with the mixture throttle valve 14. In a multi-cylinder engine separate air tubes with separate air valves or a branched tube with a common air valve may be used. The air valve or valves may be interconnected with mixture enrichment means of the ignitable mixture supply to be closed when the enrichment means is in operation.
