Abstract
1,212,329. Tubular lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 30 June, 1969 [28 June, 1968], No 32995/69. Heading B1F. A method of manufacturing a tipless lamp comprises the steps of inserting a filament assembly 4 into a tube having a length greater than the predetermined required length of the lamp envelope, the filament being provided with a crossbar 3 at one end engaging one end wall of the tube so that when tension is applied to the other end of the filament it is stretched axially within the tube, sealing the other end 10 of the tube remote from the crossbar, connecting the. open unsealed end of the tube to. a vacuum head, exhausting and filling the tube through the head, press sealing the tube at a short distance from its. open end and severing the extra length of tube 17 outside the seal 15. A thin groove 16 may be provided to simplify this last operation.. End caps are then fitted to the envelope and the crossbar 3 and surplus wire is cut off. The filament is of coiled tungsten wire supported by spacers 11, and the envelope may be filled with nitrogen, argon, bromine or iodine.
