In an immersion burner, e.g. for concentrating sulphuric acid or thermally decomposing fused salts, a tube 4 and a concentric inner pipe 9 with helical blades 10 on its outer surface both supply a gas-air mixture, from mixers 3 and 11 respectively, to a refractory lined combustion chamber 1, to produce respectively a peripheral swirling flow and a straight through flow therein, thus providing a more uniform distribution of thermal loads and longitudinal flow velocities through the chamber than is provided with either flow separately. The mixer 3 comprises a gas inlet 7 leading to a chamber 6 connected to the tube 4 by staggered openings 8, and air flows through the tube past a flow divider 5. Gas is similarly introduced to pipe 9 from a chamber 12, with air flowing through the pipe from a chamber 13, above which is located a viewing port 18. On starting the burner, using a spark-plug 16, only the pipe 9 is used until the lining 2 of chamber 1 is hot enough to ignite the peripheral flow from tube 4. An air excess factor of 1 to 2À5 gives steady operation and combustion temperature controllable within the range 1000-1800‹ C.
