Abstract

1,211,527. Underwater mining. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 1 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 22218/69. Heading E1F. A collector structure of a mining system for the mining of aggregates from a surface beneath water comprises a black means 50 for scraping aggregates from the surface, a cylindrical scoop 25 for carrying aggregates away from the blade, a hopper 70 positioned within the scoop to receive aggregates therefrom and means for rotating the scoop relative to the blade means and the hopper. The scoop, which is rotatably mounted in a towing yoke, consists of axially spaced rings 36 that engage the surface to cause rotation of the scoop as it is towed over the surface, and longitudinally extending trays 33 secured a regular intervals around the inner surfaces of the rings, the trays 33 being for the conveyance of aggregates between the blade and the hopper. The aggregates drop off the trays into the hopper and are deflected by inclined surfaces 97, 98 to the ends of the hopper for removal therefrom at 85 by a suction source. Mesh screens disposed radially inwards and outwards of the trays allow of escape therefrom of undersize aggregates. The blade means 50 involves double ended scraper teeth being so mounted on a carrier rotatable about the axis of the scoop as to extend down between the lower portions of the rings 36. The pivotable carrier and the double ended teeth ensure of continued scraping of the surface in the event of the structure overturning. The weight of the carrier can be varied to allow of varying of the depth of penetration of the teeth and rings into the surface. Sonic signalling means are appropriately mounted on the structure to provide an intermittent signal that is a function of the rate of rotation of the scoop and so provides at the surface of the water indication of the manner of operation of the structure on the submerged surface.
