Abstract

1,211,351. Flocculating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967], No. 4713/67. Heading C1C. [Also in Division C3] Waste aqueous liquors may be clarified by adding thereto polymeric flocculating agents comprising atactic polypropylene having organic substituents linked to the polymer chain through quaternized nitrogen atoms. Specified liquors are coal-washing waters, sand and gravel quarry effluents, china clay slurries and sewage sludges. The flocculating agents may be reaction products of chlorinated polypropylene with aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic tertiary amines, and examples describe the treatment with chlorinated polypropylene/pyridine reaction products of (10) coal tailings alone and (17) in admixture with a conventional polyacrylamide flocculant; (11) sand and gravel quarry effluent; and (12-15) china clay suspensions.
