Abstract

1,210,964. Differential gearing. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 10 July, 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 42191/68. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In a four-wheel drive motor-vehicle wherein an inter-axle differential 14 has an input planet carrier 12, driven by an input shaft 10 from an engine, clutch and usual C.S.G. (all not shown), and output ring and sun gears 18, 22 respectively connected via crown wheels and pinions 30, 34 and 42, 44 of front and rear inter-wheel differentials (not shown) to the front and rear wheels 36, 46, a one-way sprag clutch 26, arranged between the ring and sun gears 18, 22, limits (i.e. locks) inter-axle differential action whenever the ring gear 18 overruns the sun gear 22 by more than a predetermined amount i.e. during front wheel spin or rear wheel lock viz. brake skid, the ratios of the front and rear inter-wheel axle being arranged so that the sun 22 normally rotates faster than the rim 18, the latter of which receives <SP>2</SP>/ 3 of the torque input from the shaft 10 whilst the sun 22 receives the remaining 1/3, the number of teeth on the sun 22 and each of the planet pinions 16 being equal.
