Abstract

1,210,957. Foamed polyisocyanurates. MOBAY CHEMICAL CO. 25 March, 1968 [24 March, 1967], No. 14296/68. Headings C3C and C3R. Foamed polyisocyanurates are prepared by reacting a polyaryl polyalkylene polyisocyanate with 2 to 15 parts by weight of an organic compound which contains 1 to 6 active hydrogencontaining groups as determined by the Zerewitinoff method and which has a M.W. of 300 to 10,000 per 100 parts of polyisocyanate in the presence of a foam stabilizer, a blowing agent and a catalyst which will cause trimerization of isocyanate groups. The polyisocyanate suitably has the formula wherein R is an organic radical obtained by removing the carbonyl oxygen atom from an aldehyde or ketone, m is 1 or 2, X is a hydrogen or a halogen atom, or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Suitable active hydrogen containing compounds are alkylene oxide modified wood resins, monoesters of glycols with high molecular weight acids, reaction products of an alkylene oxide with a monoamine, alcohol or acid, polyalkylene ether polyols, drying and semi-drying vegetable oils modified with alkylene oxides or ethylenically unsaturated alcohols, polyesters derived from di- or polyhydric alcohols with di- or polycarboxylic acids, lactone polyesters, phosphorus-containing polyols and compounds which contain free carboxyl or amino groups as well as or instead of free hydroxyl groups. Preferred foam stabilizers are those based on polysiloxanes and the blowing agent may be water or low boiling hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons. Preferred catalysts are sodium phenate, sodium trichlorophenate, 2,4,6- tris-(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol and a mixture of 80% ortho and 20% para-dimethylaminomethyl phenol. Other catalysts such as the conventional tertiary amines and organometallic compounds may also be used.
