Abstract

1,210,922. Fluid dispenser. DOVER CORP. 14 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 51810/67. Heading A4T. [Also in Division F2] A fluid-dispensing head for filling petrol into a tank 56 on a motor car, comprises a main flow valve 22 opened, e.g. by manual lever 27, and a safety mechanism 60, 64 arranged to be operated automatically by engagement with the tank, when the tank is being filled, to allow the valve 22 to be opened, but to be released when the head is disengaged from the tank to cause the main valve to be closed automatically. The mechanism is formed by a flexible non-stretchable strip 60, e.g. of steel, anchored at one end 63 to the tip of the head nozzle 32, and joined at the other end to a quadrant 64, pivoted at 66. When the nozzle 32 is inserted into the tank filler 57, the strip 60 is flexed to cause the quadrant to be rotated away from a cam 72 on the pivot of the lever 27, but if the filler is withdrawn, the quadrant is rotated to cause a tip 70 to engage a portion 76 of the cam 72, Fig. 3, not shown, to turn it and move a shaft 74 axially allowing balls 35 to move inwards out of engagement with a shoulder 41 on the head body. This releases a plunger 34 which carries a pivot 48 of the hand lever 27, so that it moves down to the chain-dotted position 45 in Fig. 1. The main flow valve 22 is then closed by a spring 24. The plunger 34 forms part of a level responsive shutoff mechanism controlled by a diaphragm 37 in response to liquid level at a capilliary outlet 43. Instead of the strip 60, a rigid member (90A) of channel-shaped crosssection, Figs. 5 and 6 not shown, may be used, which approximately follows the shape of the head nozzle (32A).
