Abstract

1,210,824. Rotary positive-displacement pumps and motors. BORG-WARNER CORP. Nov.20, 1967 [Dec.5, 1966], No.52686/67. Heading F1F. A reversible gear-pump, or motor, has a pressure-loaded wear-plate 30 abutting externallymeshing gears 13, 14 and carrying a flexible and resilient seal 80 in a groove 66 on its side farthest from the gears, lips 87, 88 being deflected by the sides of the groove so as to press the wear plate against the gears. The seal has radial portions that lie in similar portions 70--73 of the groove. The wear plate is movable transversely of a plane containing the axes of the gears so that working fluid on the high-pressure side of gears acts upon the edge of the wear plate and presses portions 58, 59, or 60, 61, of the latter against the housing to prevent back-flow around said edge. High-pressure working-fluid thereby gains access to a channel 89 through grooves 75--78 to load the seal and to spaces between the wear plate and the housing bounded by the seal on the high-pressure side to load the wear plate. Compensation for the pressure gradient across the gears is provided by the working fluid on the low-pressure side entering a space behind the wear plate between the radial portions 70, 71, or 72, 73, of the groove. In one modification, Fig.16 (not shown), the seal has a substantially rectangular cross-section. In another modification, Figs.17 to 24 (not shown), the seal is similar to that shown save that it has flexible and resilient projections (117) abutting the bottom of the groove, a rigid sealing- member (110) being placed between the seal and the housing.
