Abstract

1,210,790. Artificial resin composition. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 7 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 12319/69. Headings C3P and C3R. A composition comprises, in wt. per cent: (a) a polyimine-polyamide graft copolymer, 5-80; and (b) polyolefin(s) and/or polyester(s), 95-20. Graft copolymer (a) has a polyamine backbone wherein imino N-atoms are separated on average by # 5 chain atoms, and carry polyamide side-chains having 3-18 chain atoms between amide and carboxyl gps., with number average M.W. #500 but # ¢ M.W. of backbone; (a) may be prepared by polymerizing a lactam under non-alkaline conditions with a polyimine of M.W. #20,000, e.g. 50,000-500,000; 0À1-25 mol. polyimine is used per 100 mol. lactam; (a) preferably comprises a polycaprolactam side-chain on a polyethylenimine backbone. For (b) lists of suitable polyolefins and polyesters are given, preferred being isotactic polypropylene and/or polyethylene terephthalate. The composition may be prepared by melting a mixture of the polymers, preferably under a dry inert atmosphere, or by forming a solution of the polymers and either precipitating the mixture by adding a non-solvent, or evaporating the solvent. A fibrillatable strand may be obtained by forming a sheet or film of the composition and cutting into strips, or by extruding a monofilament of the composition. Subsequently performed may be stretching, crushing between rollers, and fibrillation by passage through an air jet stream. The split fibres have enhanced dyeability by acid dyes.
