Abstract

1,209,525. Endless conveyers; unloading vehicles. R. BIRRELL. 14 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 3718/68. Headings B8A and B8E. An endless conveyer 14, mounted in and utilized to discharge a load carrying body carried by a vehicle, comprises an endless belt 14, a substantially planar plate 16 disposed beneath the upper run 15 of the belt, sealing strips 18 between the plate 16 and the upper run 15, and a source of pressurized air to pressurize the chamber so-formed and form an air cushion to support the belt. The chamber has a plurality of longitudinally extending rails 17 to support the belt when stationary and transverse partitions (not shown) to divide the chamber into sections. Each section has a valve 21 connected to the pressurized air source and each valve has a piston (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), raisable by the pressurized air into contact with the belt such that should the belt "baloon" the piston will move to an upper position and thereby shut-off the supply of air to the chamber through pipes (50). In an alternative embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown), the seals between the belt (14) and the plate (16) are fromed from inflatable tubes (31).
