Abstract

1,209,303. Injection moulding. D. STERN. 23 Oct., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 47668/66. Heading B5A. Injection moulding apparatus for producing a succession of similar articles, e.g. car rear lamp lens, comprised of a plurality of different plastics materials, e.g. of different colours or compositions, includes a fixed platen 12 supporting a mould half 23 having differently shaped mould cavities 20-22 supplied respectively by injection cylinders 17-19 fed by hoppers 13-15, and a platen 25 which slides on bars 24 and supports a rotary core carrier 27 with four identical cores 28 equally spaced circumferentially about its rotary axis. A motor 29 indexes the carrier through angles of 90 degrees to bring three of the four cores into line with a mould cavity at each injection station whilst the fourth core lies at a cooling and discharge station. The mould parts are brought together by a ram 30. The injection cylinders are axially adjustable relative the mould cavities to bring their nozzles into engagement therewith, and they also may be adjusted vertically and swivelled about vertical spigots. At the first injection station the cylinder 17 injects a clear plastics material into the cavity 20 and on to the core, following which the carrier is retracted and indexed to convey the partial moulding on its core to the next station where the mould cavity 21 receives it and is supplied with a red plastics material superimposed on the first; the retraction and indexing re-engagement of mould parts is repeated, and at the third station an amber material is injected into the cavity 22, so that a three-colour lamp lens is produced. At the fourth station the lens is cooled and removed from the core. Each of the four stations are operated simultaneously. An embodiment is described having four identical core members which come, in turn, into engagement with three differently shaped members located in cavities in the stationary mould part. An automatic control system for the machine is described.
