Abstract

1,209,079. Terpolymer/copolymer blends. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 28 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 31078/68. Heading C3P. A polyblend comprises 75-25% of an olefin/ alkylacrylate/alkali metal acrylate terpolymer, wherein the olefin has from 2-8 carbon atoms, the alkylacrylate from 4 to 14 carbon atoms and comprises 1 to 35% of the terpolymer, and the alkali metal acrylate comprises 1 to 42% of the termpolymer, and from 25-75% of an olefin/acrylic acid copolymer having a melt index of 0À001-500 dg/minute wherein the olefin has from 2 to 8 carbon atoms and the acrylic acid comprises from 2 to 50% out of the copolymer. The preferred olefin is ethylene, and the terpolymer may contain at least 50% of the olefin. Suitable alkyl acrylates are methyl, ethyl, or butyl acrylate, and suitable alkali metal acrylates are those of sodium and potassium. In the examples a copolymer of ethylene and ethyl or butyl acrylate is partially saponified with sodium or potassium hydroxide to form a terpolymer comprising ethylene/ ethyl or butyl acrylate/sodium or potassium acrylate, and this terpolymer is blended with a copolymer comprising ethylene/(meth)acrylc acid. The secant modulus and tensile strength of the resultant blends are measured.
