Abstract

1,208,865. Flame-resistant nylon composition. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Feb., 1968. [1 March, 1967; 2 Jan., 1968], Nos. 9634/67 and 288/68. Heading C3R. A flame resistant nylon composition comprises 45 to 90 weight per cent of nylon, 0 to 45 weight per cent of filler, 5 to 30 weight per cent of zinc oxide and 5 to 25 weight per cent of a halogenated organic additive which acts synergistically with zinc oxide to improve the flame resistance of the composition and which is thermally stable and the fabrication temperature of the nylon but releases hydrogen halide at flame temperatures. Suitable additives are those claimed in Specification 1,090,598,one of which, C 18 H 12 Cl 12 , has the structure Pentabromotoluene is also specified. The nylon may be any of the conventional polyamides and may be a mixed nylon, e.g. containing units derived from both caprolactam and hexamethylene adipamide, or a blend of different homopolymers. Glass fibre is specified as filler.
