Abstract
1,208,724. Securing knobs on shafts. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 6 Nov., 1967 [8 Nov., 1966], No. 50073/66. Headings F2L and F2U. [Also in Division H3] A knob comprises an outer part 1 of hard nylon formed with a pointer 17 and an inner part 11 of softer nylon fitting in a cavity 9, the outer part in a number of different angular positions. As shown in Fig. 3, the part 11 has a hole 15 of non-circular section fitting on a correspondingly sectioned spindle (not shown), and the parts 1, 11 have splines 10, 13 so that the parts may be assembled in a desired relative angular position, and the inner part 11, which may be split, is contracted on to the spindle. The knob is retained on the spindle by a screw passing through a hole 19 in the outer part and engaging a threaded hole in the spindle. The outer part is formed with an annular cavity 2 which is provided with numbers of radial slots 6, one or more stop-plates 8 being located in selective slots and co-operating with a fixed stop to provide a requisite stop position or desired range of angular movement for the spindle. In a modification the inner knob part 11 is rotationally secured to the spindle by a metallic insert 27 which is moulded into the part 11 and has tongues 28 engaging a diametral slot in the spindle. The inner knob part is located axially on the spindle by a ring moulded in its inner periphery engaging a peripheral groove in the spindle. The outer knob part is located axially on the inner part by a ring moulded in the outer periphery of the inner part engaging a space between two rings moulded in the cavity in the outer part.
