Abstract

1,208,193. Variable-ratio gears. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 28 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967; 22 Dec., 1967], No. 56479/68. Heading F2D. A clutch or brake of a planetary gear is engaged hydraulically, the rate of engagement being controlled by a valve 110 selectively connecting a supply passage 215 and a vent chamber 115 to a passage 126 leading to a clutch or brake chamber K. The left-hand end of the valve is connected to the clutch passage 126 by a throttle 126a and the right-hand end is loaded by spring 122 which is loaded in turn by clutch pressure acting through a throttle 125a on the right-hand side of a piston 124 and opposed by engine torque or engine or vehicle speed responsive pressure supplied through a passage 222 to the left-hand side of the piston 124. The supply pressure 215 can be constant or dependent on engine loading. The arrangement gives rapid light engagement of the clutch or brake followed by controlled increase to full application. A one-way valve 127a permits rapid disengagement. In a modification (Fig. 7) for controlling two brakes B1F, B1 which are to be applied sequentially, the valve spool 151 has lands controlling connection from a brake passage 166 to a supply passage 214 and to a vent chamber 155, and also controlling connection of a brake line 177 to a supply line 216, the valve being biased to the right by brake pressure 166 supplied through a throttle 166a and being biased to the left by a spring 162 loaded by brake pressure 166 supplied through a throttle 165a and opposed by torque or speed responsive pressure 222. The arrangement is such that after initial application of both brakes the valve is shifted rightwardly to cut off the supply to brake B1 and throttle the supply to brake B1F. When the pressure supplied to the brake B1F has risen sufficiently the piston 161 and valve 151 are shifted leftwardly to open brake B1 to supply 216 to complete application of this brake.
