Abstract

1,207,860. Halide oxidation. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 29 Nov., 1967 [14 Dec., 1966], No. 54418/67. Headings C1A and C1N. In a process for preparing a metal or Si oxide by vapour phase oxidation of the corresponding halide with O 2 , the reactants are fed into the reactor at a linear velocity of 10-100 m/sec. in the form of two separate annular conical jets having an angle of intersection of 50-110 degrees. CO may be burnt with excess O 2 in a combustion chamber situated above the reactor, thereby preheating the O 2 to a temperature, e.g. 1300-1800‹ C., at least 500‹ C. higher than that of the halide, which may be preheated to 300-500‹ C. The velocity of the halide may be equal to or lower than that of the O 2 . The streams may have a thickness of 0À1-1 cm., and either reactant may form the outer stream. Examples describe the oxidation of TiCl 4 containing 1% AlCl 3 or 0À5% SiCl 4 . Reference is also made to halides of Zr, Si, Al, Zn, Cr and Fe.
