Abstract

1,207,640. Feeding vacuum furnaces. LEYBOLD - HERAEUS - VERWALTUNG G.m.b.H. 8 Sept., 1969 [10 Sept., 1968], No. 44357/69. Heading F4B. In a vacuum melting furnace 1 in which a feed column 13 extending through a vacuum seal over the furnace roof carries a progressively melting block, load cells 3 carry a platform 4 supporting a driving unit 10 on columns 5 and 6, and the seal 15 makes a gas-tight joint with a flange 17 on said roof by a bellows 16. Driving unit 10 actuates a screwed spindle 11 engaging a nut 12 on said column 13 carried by a crossmember 9 attached to sleeves 7 and 8 on said columns 5 and 6. Lateral displacement of platform 4 is prevented by guide pins 40 in sockets 41. A pressure equalizing pipe 19 in a C-shaped arm 23 on the furnace body 2 connects the furnace interior with a bellows 18 similar to bellows 16. Friction between seal 15 and column 13 is balanced by a reaction in the driving unit 10 and with the balance between bellows 16 and 18 ensures that the weight registered by load cells 3 comprises only that of the platform and its associated equipment and that of the charge block. In a modification (Fig. 2) the body 2 of the furnace is extended upwardly to form a closed frame (24) with upper ledges (25) from which the load cells support the driving unit. A similar modification (Fig. 3) has the upper part (2a) of the furnace removable by hydraulic motors (27).
