A method of making cigarette packages comprises feeding a lower web a, e.g. of synthetic resin, between ribbed and grooved rollers e, e<SP>1</SP> to form a series of transverse grooves c, then feeding cigarettes k from a shoot i into the grooves, covering the lower web with a second web b, welding the webs along their longitudinal edges and parallel to the terminal grooves with welding devices l, m and cutting the welded webs into separate packages with a cutter n. The packages have one or more tear strips (g<SP>1</SP>), (g<SP>11</SP>), Fig. 1 (not shown), inserted before welding inwardly of the weld positions (d<SP>1</SP>), (d<SP>11</SP>). The webs may also be welded together between the grooves c. The package may be folded through 180 degrees about its centre and inserted into a package with a sliding drawer. The web b may be printed upon.
