Abstract

1,207,192. Adhesive laminates; moulding laminates. B. F. GOODRICH CO: 17 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 52328/67. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] An adhesive laminate is made by providing two plastisol layers (A) and (B) in contact, (A) being an adhesive plastisol containing vinyl chloride resin, plasticizer, a polyepoxide having a plurality of vicinal epoxy groups and an amine curing agent therefor, and (B) being a plastisol containing vinyl chloride resin and plasticizer, and heated at a temperature sufficient to gel both layers but insufficient to cure adhesive layer (A). The material can be made by successively casting, spreading, spraying, printing or stencilling plastisol (A) and plastisol (B) on to a substrate and gelling. The following embodiments are described: (1) The adhesive laminate is formed into the gelled state on a release surface, stripped off and used to bond metals, glass, fabrics and vinyl surfaces. In an example, the adhesive layer (A) is bonded to glass by heating to cure and layer (B) is bonded to polyvinyl chloride-coated fabric by heat and pressure or solvent welding: dielectric heating can be used. (2) In the method of (1) the laminate is formed in the gelled state directly on to one of the layers to be bonded, e.g. a metal layer. (3) A metal sheet is coated successively with layers (A) and (B). Layer (A) is subsequently cured and layer (B) can be provided with a flocking. Gelling may be at 200-350‹ F. and curing of layer (A) may be at 325-410‹ F. Adhesive plastisol (A) contains 60-150 parts by weight of plasticizer and polyepoxide per 100 parts by weight vinyl chloride resin, 20-70% by weight of the plasticizer-polyepoxide content being polyepoxide, and contains 30-300% of the equivalent weight, based on the number of vicinal epoxy equivalent weights in the polyepoxide, of amine curing agent. The vinyl chloride resin may be a homopolymer or a copolymer of at least 70 wt. per cent vinyl chloride; a long list of suitable co-monomers is given. The resin may be incorporated as particles of size 0À2-4 micron. Examples of plasticizers, resin stabilizers, monomeric and polymeric polyepoxides and curing agents are given. Pigments and fillers may be present.
