In a rolling diaphragm gas spring, consisting of a gas-filled chamber 19 and a piston 10 which are sealingly linked by a tubular diaphragm 18, guide surfaces 28 and 34 support all but a short " return-bend " portion of the diaphragm in all relative positions of the piston and cylinder. The guide surfaces, which are preferably extensions of the chamber and piston respectively as shown, each have a cylindrical portion 30 or 34 and a tapering portion 32 or 36 such that the cross-sectional area of the " return-bend " is constant over a range of piston movement from the mean position shown to the fully-contracted state of the spring (when the diaphragm has the dot-dashed position), but this area diminishes as the piston moves from the mean to the fullyextended position. In consequence, the loaddeflection characteristic of the spring is of the form shown in the lower curve of Fig. 2, so that the spring has a variable spring rate as depicted in the upper curve of Fig. 2. The shape of the diaphragm before fitting may be cylindrical or frusto-conical. The spring may be combined with a piston-cylinder hydraulic damper to constitute a vehicle suspension unit.
