Abstract
1,206,604. Fused electrolyte cell. TATABANYAI ALUMINIUMKOHO. Oct. 4, 1967, No.45291/67. Heading C7B. A fused electrolyte cell for aluminium production comprises one or more carbon containing anodes 11 having a horizontal lower surface and depending into a cathode tank on the base A1 of which collects the precipitated aluminium melt 9, forming a level surface corresponding to or larger than the horizontal cross-section of the anode and covering completely one or more electrically conductive elevations 7, 8 formed of pre-baked carbon or graphite blocks or of a tamping mass with carbon as basic material (having specific electrical resistance of 5-70 ohms-cm 2/m) on the base under points at which or near where alumina is charged into the cell or along the anode periphery (10), Fig. 3 (not shown) and/or below the anode (12), (Fig. 5). The total surface of the elevation(s), projected on to a horizontal plane, is at least 20% of the horizontal cross-section of the anode(s). The upper surface of the elevation(s) may be horizontal or inclined at an angle not exceeding 15 degrees to the horizontal, the side faces being vertical or inclined at least 10 degrees to the horizontal, and/ or the surface of a cylinder and/or a cone. E.g. alternating cylinders and squares of pre-fired graphite may be set in sintered magnesite, SiC, corundum, coke, a tamping mass produced from a mixture thereof with tar or pitch binder, or prebaked blocks having a ceramic binder. Alumina slime is thus avoided on the cathode surface.
