Abstract

1,205,953. Vehicle fuel tanks. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Feb., 1968 [14 March, 1967], No. 12034/67. Heading B7H. In a vehicle fuel tank which is sealed except during filling to prevent evaporation of fuel, a part of the wall of the enclosure 1 containing the fuel is displaceable to accommodate expansion due to high temperatures, and a non- return valve 7 permits air to enter as fuel is withdrawn. As shown, a flexible plastics bellows 9 disposed within the tank has an integral vent pipe 10 extending through the tank wall. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the bellows are disposed outside the tank, and in Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) a vented casing outside the tank contains an expansion chamber formed by a pliable plastics envelope or a flexible diaphragm.
