Abstract

1,205,538. Mooring ships. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. 23 April, 1969 [7 May, 1968], No. 20783/69. Heading B7S. An arrangement for mooring a tanker 10 at an off-shore oil storage installation 60, comprises booms 22, 24 supported by a floating annulus 26, Fig. 6, and end floats 40, 52, the annulus 26 being coupled elastically by radial nylon ropes, Fig. 11 (not shown), to an annulus rotatably surrounding a neck 58 of the storage installation and lined with, e.g. teak or lignum vitae. Fenders, Fig. 8 (not shown), are disposed along the tanker-engaging sides of the booms. In use, propulsion means 92 on float 40 are used to orientate the boom assembly such that, with the vessel heading into the wind or current, float 52 is disposed nearer the vessel than float 40. Mooring lines are then attached from the vessel bow to floats 52 and 40, and boom 24 is then pulled or propelled to lie alongside the vessel, Fig. 5 (not shown). Oil and ballast can be passed through pipes or tubular portions of booms 22 and 24. Ballasting of the mooring arrangement may be adjusted during mooring to change its natural frequency.
