Abstract

1,205,507. Unwinding webs. WOODMAN CO. Inc. 19 Aug., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967], No. 39503/68. Heading B8R. The two rollers 17, 18 supporting a web roll R in an unwinding operation have rubber strips 20, 21 glued to their peripheries to form pockets 20a, 21a which accommodate slackness in the web. The strips are arranged in herring-bone pattern and the bights of the strips on one roller are directed in the opposite direction to the bights of the other roller. The roll R is rotated by the tension in the web and causes the rollers 17, 18 to rotate. The ends of the roll R abut guide rollers (32, 33) on the ends of rods 30, (31) extending from slides 40, 41 adjustably clamped to a double bar guideway 42. The tension in the web W is controlled by two brake blocks 65 engaging the rollers 17, 18; the brake blocks 65 are carried by a dancer lever 55 formed by two L-shaped members 56, 57 connected by cross-bars 53, 54 and pivoted on stub shafts 60. The web W is formed into two loops L1, L2 by the cross-bars 53, 54 and reversing rollers 50, 51, 52 and the lengths of the loops vary with the web tension. A spring 61 urges the L-shaped members to maintain the web W under tension.
