Abstract

1,205,481. Desulphurizing oil. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 6 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 10981/68. Heading C5E. A process for the production of low sulphur content heavy fuel oil containing not more than 2 weight per cent sulphur from high sulphur content petroleum residua containing more than 2 weight per cent of sulphur comprises separating high sulphur petroleum residue boiling at 650‹ F. or above into an asphaltic fraction and a non-asphaltic fraction, subjecting the non- asphaltic fraction to a catalytic hydrodesulphurization treatment, wherein the desulphurization of the non-asphaltic fraction is carried out in admixture with light distillate boiling at a temperature of from 300‹ F. to 700‹ F. and at least partly in the kerosene boiling range, said distillate being present in amount effective substantially to inhibit hydrocracking of said non- asphaltic fraction during the hydrodesulphurization, separating light distillate boiling at up to 700‹ F. from desulphurized non-asphaltic fraction boiling at 650‹ F. or above in the desulphurized mixture, and thereafter blending the resulting desulphurized non-asphaltic fraction with the asphaltic fraction to produce the required low sulphur content heavy fuel oil. A preferred catalyst comprises alumina and silica promoted with molybdenum and nickel. If the light distillate which may be kerosene or light diesel fuel also contains sulphur it is also desulphurized in the process. The examples disclose treatment of (1) all that part of a crude oil boiling above the middle distillate range, and (2) a vacuum gas oil.
