Abstract

1,205,436. Refractory materials. SOCIETE GENERALE DES PRODUITS REFRACTAIRES. 24 Aug., 1967 [26 Aug., 1966; 16 Jan., 1967], No. 39073/67. Headings C1A and C1J. A refractory material, containing magnesia, comprises a crystal structure of contiguous monocrystals of a size at least equal to 20 microns, particularly periclasite monocrystals, assembled in crystalline aggregates of a grain size at least equal to 200 microns; and has a specific density of at least 3, an apparent porosity not greater than 8% by volume and a resistance to thermal deformation such that linear shrinkage does not exceed 0.5% after being maintained at 1500‹ C. for 24 hours and subsequently at the same temperature and under a load of 2 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> for a further 100 hours. The refractory material may contain at least 92% of its total weight of magnesia the rest comprising the oxides present in the initial mixture which are not eliminated during firing. A preferred refractory product contains at least 92% by weight of a mixture of from 20 to 80% by weight of magnesia and 80 to 20% by weight of at least one other refractory material chosen from Cr 2 O 3 , natural chromite, TiO 2 and calcined dolomite. The refractory material is made by preparing from fully calcined magnesia of a purity corresponding to that required for the final product, a mixture having by weight at least 50% of grains of sizes between 5 mm. and 0.2 mm., of which at least half is of between 5 mm. and 1À5 mm., less than 50% of magnesia crushed to less than 200 microns and 1 to 6% of recrystallization additions, e.g. combinations of the SiO 2 -CaO or B 2 O 3 -CaO systems, crushed to less than 74 microns, forming this mixture to shape, firing the resultant products at a temperature between 1550‹ and 1650‹ C., causing the formation of a transient liquid phase of high vapour pressure which by at least partial volatilization of its ingredients promotes the formation of the monocrystals and the crystalline aggregates. Optionally, the mixture contains 0.2 to 1% by weight of an organic binder, e.g. bisulphite lye.
