Abstract

[Also in Divisions B6 and G5] A sheet 15 of plastics material having two or more areas whose light reflecting or transmitting properties differ, to give a decorative effect, is produced by applying to a flat plate 10 a pigmented resinous material 12 which is allowed to creep over the areas of a desired pattern e.g. lettering, and to gel, whereafter the gelled material is trimmed to the area of the pattern by cutting with a knife around an aligned template 13 and then further resinous material 14 containing a different coloured pigment is placed in the area of the lettering, whereafter the materials are allowed to cure before removing the sheet 15 from the plate 10. The sheet 15 may be softened by heating e.g. of the plate 10, to permit removal thereof, after which it is replaced on the plate 10 to cool without adhering to the plate. A further pattern may be cut out from the material 14, whilst this is in the gelled state, to which is applied further resinous material either of the same or a different colour to the material 12. In the embodiment shown the plate 10 is of glass, used with a representation 11 of the lettering therebeneath, but a metal sheet or thick sheet of cellulose acetate may alternatively be employed. The resinous material may comprise a thermo-setting material such as epoxy or polyester resin which may be fibre reinforced. The material may also include a plasticizer, and a hardener and accelerator. The resinous materials may also comprise a clear uncoloured, or an opaque material. The sheet 15 may be employed for advertising displays, in graphic work or in environmental displays, and may be illuminated from the rear if the resins are translucent, or 'from the front if these are opaque. Decorative sheets may be produced for application to furniture. The sheet may subsequently be cut to a desired shape e.g. by heated stamping cutters.
