Abstract

1,205,220. Polishing or cutting gem stones. SPECTRUM DIAMONDS (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. 15 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 52039/66. Heading B3D. A device for use in polishing or cutting gem stones includes: (i) an arm adapted to carry a gem stone and move through a prescribed range during a process of treating the stone; (ii) a dashpot unit comprising a piston and cylinder for controlling movement of the arm towards a treatment surface; and (iii) an upstanding tube adapted to receive liquid urged from the cylinder during movement of the arm towards the treatment surface, whereby the liquid level in the tube indicates the extent of treatment to which the stone has been subjected. One end 8, Fig. 1, of an arm 4 is pivoted to a foundation 9 by a saddle 10 overlying a bar 11. The other end of the arm carries a jaw element 5 holding a gem stone 6 for polishing on a wheel 7. The arm carries a weight 24. A rod 15 engages the underside of the arm through an adjusting screw 17 and ball 16 and rests on a piston 14 in a cylinder 13 communicating with a tube 19, the level of the liquid in the tube indicating the depth of polishing. A scale 21 is provided. The level to which the liquid rises in the tube 19 may terminate polishing or sound a warning, e.g. the liquid is mercury and bridges terminals 22, Fig. 3, in the tube 19 to stop the wheel 7 and optionally also to raise the stone from the wheel. Alternatively, a float may be used. For cutting or sawing gem stones an arm 25, Fig. 2, is pivoted through bar 26 to foundation elements 27 and has a jaw arrangement 28 holding a stone 29 to be sawn by a wheel 30. A weight 36 is provided. An adjustable screw 31 engages a piston 32 in a cylinder 33 communicating with a tube 34.
