Abstract

1,204,686. Drying blood. CO-OPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY Ltd. 14 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec., 1966], No. 56777/67. Heading A2D. [Also in Division F4] In a process for drying blood, coagulated and dewatered blood having a moisture content not greater than 50% by wt. is tumbled as it is passed as a thin film (i.e. less than one inch) between two heated surfaces. The blood may be coagulated by steam and dewatered in a centrifuge. The coagulated and dewatered blood may be mixed with dried blood to reduce the moisture content of the blood being passed to the heated surfaces, to 50% by wt. or less. A suitable apparatus comprises tiers 2, 3, 4 each tier being made up of a rotatable internally steam heated pipe 10 provided with conveying worm 11 and surrounded by a plurality of sections 5. Each section 5 comprises a pipe 7 provided with steam jacket 6 and vents 9. In use, coagulated and dewatered blood from inlet 19 is passed and tumbled or turned along the annular spaces between the pipes 10 and 7 to outlet 27 and chamber 23. From chamber 23 part of the dried blood is recirculated to be mixed with coagulated and dewatered blood being passed along worm conveyer 18 leading to inlet 19, and part is passed to a hammer mill and then to a bagging hopper. Water vapour from the annular spaces is passed through vents 9 to chambers 12 which are at a temperature to substantially prevent condensation. The apparatus may be provided with means for automatically stopping it if there is any failure in the apparatus.
