To measure the rotation of a member 1 impulses are induced in N pick ups 41, 42 . . . as the member rotates, simultaneously rotating reference members 21, 22 . . . each associated with one of N teeth 11, 12 . . . on the member 1 and displaced from the associated teeth by an angle α also inducing impulses in N pick ups 21, 22. . . , displaced from pick ups 41, 42 . . . by an angle # the outputs from the pick ups being applied in pairs to N bi-stable circuits 61, 62 . . . (Fig. 3). The outputs 111, 112 . . . of the bistable circuits (switched to their " 1 " state by an impulse from pick ups 21, 22 . . . respectively) are applied to a switching circuit 4 to which are also applied the outputs from N pick ups 51, 52 . . . sensing a further simultaneously rotating member 91 (Fig. 2). The pick ups 51, 52 . . . are so positioned that the combination of signals on leads 101, 102 . . . (Fig. 3) changes for each change on the output leads 111, 112 . . . The circuit 4 preferably comprises a matrix of AND gates so that a different combination signal is obtained on N outputs 71, 72 . . . , the output on the kth channel representing the movement of the kth tooth (i.e. the output pulses on channel 71 represent the rotation of tooth 11 past pick ups 41, 42 . . .).
