Abstract

1,204,540. Fuel cell electrode. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 March, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 15107/68. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] A fuel cell comprises as fuel electrode an alloy of platinum and 20-80 weight per cent of ruthenium dispersed on a support material comprising a metal silicide, tantalum boride, titanium boride or boron carbide. 2-34 mg. of the alloy may be used per sq. cm. of surface area of the support. It may be prepared by mixing boron carbide particles with solutions of a platinum salt, and a ruthenuim salt and nitric acid, drying the treated particles, grinding and sieving them and reducing them with H 2 gas. The platinum salt may be Pt(NH 3 ) 2 (NO 2 ) 2 or H 2 PtCl 6 and the ruthenium salt may be RuNO(OH) 3 H 2 O or ruthenium nitrate or chloride. The reduced particles may be mixed with an aqueous suspension of PTFE as binder and applied to a platinum grid which is dried before spraying on a surface film of PTFE. The fuel may be a mixture of hydrogen and 2-10 weight per cent of carbon monoxide, the oxidant air and the electrolyte sulphuric acid. The oxidant electrode may comprise Pt black with PTFE as binder. A particular embodiment is shown in Fig. 1. The fuel may be a reformed hydrocarbon prepared in reformer 32. Where ambient air is the oxidant end-plate 20 may be omitted.
