Abstract

1,204,352. Trimming vegetable plants. UNILEVER Ltd. 30 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966], No. 54480/67. Heading A1F. An apparatus for trimming waste leaves from Brussels sprouts, white cabbage or cauliflower while the plants are still growing in the field comprises a guide sleeve 6 and a rotating gear-ring 15 having either a knife-like edge or cutters 18 or an annular band saw. The gear-ring is engaged by a pinion connected through a flexible shaft 12 to an electric motor mounted on the back of an operator. The guide sleeve 6 is made in two parts 6a, 6b and inner sleeves may be fitted in the sleeve 6 for smaller plants. The apparatus has a two-part housing 15 surrounding the sleeve 6 and is provided with a carrying rod 1 having a hand grip 2, members 22 and 23 being provided for resting the apparatus on the ground and for protecting the operator's feet. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cutters 18b are pivoted at 29 to the gear-ring 15a and are urged inwardly by a garter spring 30. Rotation of the gear-ring causes the cutter to move outwardly by a distance dependent on speed. The cutter movement is limited by two stops 32, 33.
